The South African Competition Tribunal has approved Remgro Healthcare Holdings' acquisition of Mediclinic International, subject to specific employment-related conditions. The transaction, valued at £3.7 billion ($4.5 billion), has now secured all necessary merger control approvals. The Competition Tribunal imposed conditions aimed at safeguarding employment interests, particularly concerning the status of permanent and fixed-term contract employees. The Competition Tribunal also emphasized that the merger should benefit South Africa's public healthcare sector. The approval follows a recommendation from the Competition Commission, which had previously supported the deal with similar stipulations. The acquisition is led by Remgro Limited, Mediclinic's largest shareholder, and is being facilitated by legal advisors including Linklaters, Slaughter and May, and Freshfields.
