Amazon's Texas gas plan turns AI demand into a Climate Pledge stress test
Amazon's AI buildout is colliding with its climate brand. Earlier this week, AmazonAMZN-- confirmed it had acquired the GW Ranch site in Pecos County for an off-grid AI campus. The credibility problem is straightforward: a facility permitted for 33 million tons of carbon dioxide a year is emerging just as Amazon says it is still committed to eliminating its carbon emissions by 2040.
This is not a small side project. Amazon confirmed a site capable of generating 7.65 gigawatts, at least initially off-grid. That raises the central question: is this a temporary workaround driven by power shortages, or an early sign that Amazon's climate commitments are struggling to keep pace with AI-scale demand?
Why Amazon is choosing on-site gas first

Why Amazon's renewable headline does not settle the issue
Amazon says 100% of electricity consumed was matched with renewable energy in 2024. That is a real achievement, but it does not erase the climate question raised by the Texas plant.
