James Hardie Industries plc was founded in 1888 as an import business company. In 1951, the company became a state-owned listed company and listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. After becoming a public company, the company built a diversified portfolio of construction and industrial products, including a variety of asbestos-based products. In the mid-1980s, it pioneered the development of asbestos-free fiber cement technology and began to design and manufacture a wider range of fiber cement building products, taking advantage of the durability, versatility and robustness of the products.
