United Community Banks, Inc., a bank holding company incorporated under the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956, as amended, was established in 1987 under the laws of the State of Georgia. The market for banking and related banking services is extremely competitive. But United competes aggressively in its markets, which include North Georgia, Atlanta, Georgia MSA, Gainesville, coastal Georgia, western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, the Greenville-Molding-Easley area, South Carolina, and it operates a number of other deposit and credit services. Its competitors include other commercial banks, savings banks, deposit and loan organizations, credit unions, mortgage companies and brokerage firms. United Community Banks is the third largest traditional bank holding company in Georgia.
