Transalta Corporation was established on October 8, 1992 under the Certificate of Amalgamation of the Canadian Business Corporations Act. On December 31, 1992, under the Certificate of Amendment of the Canadian Business Corporations Act, TransAlta and TransAlta Utilities formulated a plan for corporate integration. TransAlta and its predecessors have been engaged in the production and sale of electric energy since 1909. TransAlta has three business segments: power generation, energy trading and enterprise. The power generation department is responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the company's power generation facilities. The Energy Trading Division is responsible for the wholesale trading of electricity and other energy-related commodities and derivatives, and also includes the management of available power generation and the need to generate fuel and transmission for the business. These two divisions are provided by the Enterprise Division with finance, tax, finance, laws, regulations, environment, health and safety, sustainability, corporate communications, government and investor relations, procurement, information technology, risk management, human resources, internal audit support and other administrative services, including compliance and governance services.
