Stepan Company was incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware on February 19, 1959. Its subsidiaries produce specialty and intermediate chemicals, which are sold to manufacturers and then made into various end products. The Company has three reportable segments: Surfactants, Polymers and Specialty Products. Surfactants are chemical agents that affect the interaction between two surfaces; the company can provide effects such as detergency (that is, the ability of water to remove soil from another surface), wetting and foaming, dispersion, emulsification (to help mix two different liquids), demulsification, viscosity modification and bactericidal disinfectant. Surfactants are the basic cleaning agents used in detergents for washing clothes, tableware, carpets, muslins, floors and walls. Surfactants are also used for the same purposes in shampoos, body washes and conditioners, fabric softeners, toothpastes, cosmetics and other personal care products. Commercial and industrial applications include emulsifiers for agricultural products, floor polishes and emulsion polymers such as latex foams and coatings, wetting and foaming agents for wallboard manufacturing, surfactants for improving oil recovery and biodiesel. Polymers, including two primary product lines of polyols and phthalic anhydride, are used in various types of specialty polymers. Polyurethane polyols are used in the manufacture of rigid foams for thermal insulation in the construction industry. The company is also a raw material base for coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers. Phthalic anhydride is used in polyester resins, alkyd resins, plasticizers, in building materials and components for automobiles, boating, and other consumer goods, and internally in the company's polyols. Specialty products are chemicals used in food, flavorings, nutritional supplements and pharmaceutical applications.
