Nisource Inc., the successor to an Indiana corporation established in 1987 and renamed NiSource Inc. in 1999, is an energy holding company operating under the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 2005. The company's main subsidiaries are fully regulated natural gas and electric utility businesses, which together serve customers in six US states. NiSource's principal subsidiaries include NiSource Gas Distribution Group, Inc., which owns Columbia, Kentucky, Columbia, Maryland, Columbia, Ohio, Columbia, Pennsylvania and Columbia, Virginia, and NIPSCO Holdings I, The latter has a controlling interest in NIPSCO, a combined natural gas and electricity utility. Almost all of the company's revenue and earnings come from these regulated businesses. Through its subsidiary Generation Holdings I, NiSource also develops power generation resources designed to support data center customers.
