The Aes Corporation was established in 1981. The company is a next-generation energy company with more than 40 years of experience helping the world transition to clean, renewable energy. AES Corporation is a holding company that operates a geographically diversified portfolio of power generation and distribution businesses through its subsidiaries and affiliates. Within its six SBUs, the company has two business lines. The first line of business is power generation, owning and operating power plants, generating and selling electricity to customers such as utilities, industrial users and intermediaries. The second line of business is utilities, that is, owning and operating utilities that produce or purchase, distribute, transmit and sell electricity to end-user customers in residential, commercial, industrial and government sectors within specified service areas. In some cases, its utilities also produce and sell electricity in the wholesale market.
