Olympic Steel, Inc., was founded in 1954 by the Siegor family as a general steel service center. The Company is a leading metal service center operating two reporting segments; Flat Products and Round Tube and Duct Products. The company provides metal processing and distribution services to a variety of customers. The main focus of the company's business is the direct sale and distribution of finished carbon, coated, aluminum and stainless steel rolled sheet, coil and sheet products. The company acquired Chicago Metro and Iron Corporation (CTI) on July 1, 2011. It also distributes and manufactures metal pipes, pipes, bars, valves and fittings for a variety of industrial market pressure-bearing components. Products that require more additional processing usually have larger gross margins and higher profit margins. Therefore, the company's overall gross profit margin is affected by, among other things, product mix, volume of processing, demand for metals, selling prices and fluctuations in raw material procurement costs. The company charges a fee for processing metal owned by customers. The Company sells certain products internationally, mainly to Puerto Rico and Mexico. International sales had little impact on its consolidated financial results.
