Introduction

United Bankshares, Inc., a West Virginia corporation, was incorporated as a bank holding company under the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956, as amended. Established on March 26, 1982 and reorganized on September 9, 1982, it started business operations on May 1, 1984 after acquiring three wholly-owned subsidiaries. Since its establishment in 1982, it has 28 banking institutions. As of December 31, 2012, there are two banking subsidiaries, "doing business" under the name United Bank, one of which is called United Bank under West Virginia law. United's banking subsidiaries offer a range of commercial and retail banking services and products. United also has a number of non-bank subsidiaries dedicated to other community banking services such as asset management, real estate title insurance, investment banking, financial planning and brokerage services. Operating segment: United's business activities are limited to one reportable segment, the Community Bank. As a community banking entity, United offers a range of products and services through its various development channels.
