Intuitive Surgical, Inc. was established on November 9, 1995. Intuitive Surgical, Inc. designs, manufactures and sells da Vinci surgical systems and related instruments and accessories that, taken together, are advanced surgical systems that the company believes represent a new generation of surgery. The company believes that this new generation of surgery, which the company calls da Vinci surgery, combines the benefits of minimally invasive surgery for patients with the ease of use, precision and dexterity of open surgery. The Da Vinci Surgical System consists of a surgeon's console, a patient-side cart, and a high-performance vision system. The Da Vinci Surgical System translates the natural hand movements performed by the surgeon on the instrument control on the console into the corresponding micro movements of the instrument located in the patient's body through small incisions or ports. The Da Vinci Surgical System is designed to provide its surgical surgeons with intuitive control, range of motion, fine tissue manipulation capabilities and 3-D, high-definition (HD) vision, while allowing them to work through the small port of MIS.
