Cathay General Bancorp was founded on August 22, 1961. The company is headquartered in the Chinatown district of Los Angeles at 777 North Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012. In addition, as of December 31, 2017, the bank has branches in California (41), New York (12), Massachusetts (1), Texas (2), Washington (3), Illinois (3 branches), Nevada (1), New Jersey (1) and Hong Kong, China (1), and has representative offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei. Deposit accounts in the Hong Kong branch of China are not insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Each branch has the right to approve loans, but is limited by the authorized loan limit of the branch manager. The current activities of the Shanghai and Taipei representative offices are limited to coordinating the transfer of documents to the head office and providing liaison services.
