CKX Lands, Inc., began operations in 1930 as Calcasio Real Estate and Petroleum LLC. The company was originally spun off from a bank operating in southwestern Louisiana. The purpose of the spin-off is to form an entity to hold non-produced minerals that regulators require banks to write off. Over the years, as some of the mineral interests began to produce, the company used part of the proceeds to acquire land. Today, most of the company's revenue comes from mineral production on land it has acquired over the years. CKX earns income from earthquake permits, mineral leases and the landowner portion of any oil and gas production.
