The $800B AI buildout is now a verification test

The scale is too large to ignore: the Big Five are slated to spend approximately $725 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026, while another recent read puts the full-year buildout at $775B-$800B for the full year. TrendForce also expects combined capex for the largest cloud providers to rise approximately 90% YoY in 2026.
That is big enough to show up in shipments, bookings, and supplier revenue if the spending is real. The practical question this week is simple: is capex still just a forward story, or is it finally appearing where investors can verify it?

- packaging, testing, and substrate partners

That sequence matters because hyperscaler spending does not become revenue at the cloud level; it becomes hardware first, then supplier revenue next.

AI data-center electricity use rose 50% in 2025 to about 485 TWh and is projected to reach 950 TWh by 2030. Axis Intelligence also cites a structural capacity shortfall of 9.3 GW in the U.S. data-center market. When power, transformers, switchgear, or labor tighten, projects can slip and costs can rise before the full AI revenue chain is visible in earnings.
The key point is not that AI automatically reaccelerates the broader inflation tape. It is that bottlenecks can keep pricing firm in the affected parts of the infrastructure chain.
Memory and packaging are the other valves
IDC expects the semiconductor market to pass $1.29T in 2026 revenue, but the more important clue is mix. Memory demand is tied closely to AI buildouts, and IDC notes that DRAM revenue could reach $418.6 billion in 2026, supported by HBM demand.
If hyperscalers remain committed to roughly $720–745B of 2026 capex, then memory and advanced-packaging capacity become key valves through which all that spending has to pass. When capacity is hard to scale quickly, supply conditions often stay tight.

Bull case vs. bear case on the inflation angle
