Luckin's 35% Growth Passes the Smell Test-Now Q2 Has to Prove the Margins Aren't Soft

Luckin's demand story is proven; margin quality is the real debate
Luckin has already cleared the basic demand hurdle. In the first quarter, revenue rose 35.3% year over year to RMB12.0 billion and average monthly transacting customers reached 93.1 million, up 25.3% year over year. But Q2 results were released today, along with a conference call the same day. That shifts the focus from demand to profit quality: investors now need the fresh print and management's answers to judge whether Luckin's growth is becoming more durable.
A 25.3% increase in average monthly transacting customers is strong evidence of real consumer traction. It is not the kind of figure usually sustained by a single promo. The harder question is whether that traffic is translating into better earnings, not just more cups.
That is not inherently bad. A franchise-style model can be fast and capital light. But it does change what investors should watch. The key question is whether that mix is feeding through to cleaner corporate profitability.
Revenue jumped while operating income barely moved
At the P&L level, the mismatch was stark. Luckin reported GAAP operating income of RMB715.9 million, only slightly below RMB735.2 million in the same quarter of 2025. Even after adjusting for margin changes, net profit was RMB506 million, or a 4.2% margin. Revenue rose sharply, but the profit catch did not keep pace.
The Q2 check: is Luckin getting more profitable, or just bigger?
Luckin's second-quarter 2026 financial results are now out, so the setup is no longer theoretical. After Q1, when profitability did not keep pace with revenue growth, the real scorecard is simple: did Q2 improve profit quality, or is Luckin still buying headline growth?
What would strengthen the bull case
Bulls do not need explosive new demand. They need evidence that a chain this large can convert volume into earnings without leaning harder on price support.
Watch for: - Revenue growth that holds up without an obvious increase in promo dependency. - Better profit-line movement than last quarter, showing operating leverage rather than flat earnings on a larger base. - Straightforward commentary on any margin pressure, instead of explanations that rely mainly on mix or temporary support.
What will keep skeptics in control
The bearish argument is straightforward: size alone does not justify a higher multiple if profitability remains uneven.
Watch for: - Revenue still running ahead of sustainable profitability. - Management leaning on expansion, channel mix, or temporary supports to explain the quarter. - Guidance or commentary that sounds defensive rather than confident.
The practical test now
The deal-breaker is simple: Luckin improves its case if Q2 shows more profit per customer and per store, not just more location count and more cups. Read the release for profit quality first. If that improved, the growth story looks more credible. If not, Luckin is still a very large coffee chain that has yet to prove it is a higher-quality compounder.
