Luckin's 28.5% Revenue Jump Looks Real-But 5.3% Same-Store Slippage Is the Tell

Luckin's Q2 headline growth was strong, but the comp story softened
Luckin's second quarter showed fast top-line growth alongside a softer core-store trend.
After the August 3, 2026 earnings release and call, the obvious headline was hard to miss: Luckin reported a 28.5% year-over-year revenue increase, RMB15.9 billion in total net revenues, RMB2.1 billion in GAAP operating income, and 112.7 million average monthly transacting customers. The brand still has clear demand behind it.
The quieter number matters more for valuation. Same-store sales growth for self-operated stores declined 5.3%. That does not invalidate the quarter, but it does change the read. Strong revenue growth can come from brand strength, and it can also come from adding more stores.

The bullish case is straightforward: customer count is still rising, profits are still healthy, and the business remains far from stalled. The more cautious read is that Luckin may be relying more on location growth than on older stores compounding at prior rates.
Product mix and store economics still look intact
Freshly brewed drinks still drive the business
The revenue mix supports the view that Luckin is still mainly growing through its core coffee business. Freshly Brewed Drinks Revenue: RMB11.2 billion, representing about 70% of total net revenues. That matters because it suggests demand is still centered on drinks rather than secondary categories.
That does not mean the core business is booming. It means the basic demand test is still passing.
Expansion is still doing a large share of the work
Luckin ended the quarter with 36,310 stores and added 2,714 net new stores in Q2. Self-operated store revenue still rose 26.6% year over year to RMB11,564.1 million. But with same-store sales growth negative 5.3%, new locations appear to be carrying a larger portion of the revenue growth.
That is not automatically negative. It can reflect successful market coverage and convenience-led capture. It can also hint at some cannibalization as newer stores open near existing ones. Either way, investors should not read this quarter as proof that older stores are still performing better than they did a year ago.
Profitability suggests the model is still sound
Store-level operating profit for self-operated stores was RMB2,468.6 million, with a store-level operating margin of 21.3%. At the company level, GAAP Operating Profit: RMB2.1 billion, up 22% year-over-year, with an operating margin of 13.4% and Non-GAAP Operating Profit: RMB2.4 billion, up 26% year-over-year, with a non-GAAP operating margin of 15.1%.
Those figures suggest expansion has not broken the operating model. The quarter looks less like a story of weak unit economics and more like a phase in which growth is becoming more expansion-dependent.
What to watch in the next few quarters
This quarter is more useful as a signal than as a reason to overreact.
Luckin's cash position gives it room to keep pushing
One reason not to frame this as an outright growth-cooling headline is the balance sheet. Luckin ended the quarter with Total Cash Position: RMB10.9 billion as of June 30, 2026 and Net Operating Cash Flow: RMB2.6 billion generated in the second quarter of 2026. That provides flexibility to keep expanding and investing even if comp growth remains soft.
The signals that matter most
What would strengthen the bull case: - Same-store slippage narrows or turns positive again - Customer momentum stays firm after the record 112.7 million average monthly transacting customers - Expansion remains funded from operations rather than balance-sheet stress
What would weaken the read: - Negative same-store performance persists for more quarters - Store openings continue, but existing locations keep softening - The cash cushion starts looking more like a buffer for a tougher market than a strategic advantage
Overall read
Luckin still looks like a real consumer business with strong scale, solid unit economics, and enough cash to keep playing the long game. But this quarter should be treated as a yellow light rather than a clean green one.
