Why FPX's First Advocate Drill Program Matters

FPX has now started a 4,000-metre diamond drill program at Advocate. In junior exploration, a program of that size can either validate a target or save time by ruling one out. That is why the release matters now: if the holes find meaningful nickel, the stock gets a concrete reason to move before the story is widely accepted. If they do not, FPX can reassess without having committed to a much larger effort.
What makes the setup interesting is the product and the policy backdrop. FPX is pitching an awaruite-focused nickel story, and the company links Baptiste and its broader portfolio to Canada's Critical Minerals Strategy. If the nickel shows up in a form and project setting that investors and policymakers care about, attention is more likely to follow.
The basic debate is simple. Bulls see a small initial exploration phase with outsized upside if Advocate proves useful. Bears see another junior drilling announcement that could end up being geologically interesting but commercially inconclusive. For now, the setup looks more interesting than risky because the first capital test is modest and the upside from a successful program could be meaningful.

How FPX Chose the First Drill Targets

FPX's process is straightforward. First, it completed a large unmanned airborne magnetic survey covering more than 30 km of strike along prospective Advocate Complex ultramafic rocks. The magnetic data helps define the host geology and structures that may have localized awaruite mineralization, especially where overburden hides the bedrock.
Once the map was drawn, sampling helped anchor the targets. At Birchy North, top-of-bedrock sampling returned 0.13% DTR nickel across an 800m by 350m area. That supports the idea that awaruite is present in a form that can be recovered through simple processing, rather than nickel simply being dispersed in common rock minerals. The magnetic data then expanded the target beyond the sampled areas, helping FPX plan drilling across up to 1.2 km of strike at Birchy North.
That is the core mechanism investors should watch: survey narrows the geology, sampling confirms the metal is in the right form, and drilling tests whether the surface signal continues downhole.
Do Birchy North and Wolverine look credible?
On the surface, the targets look reasonable. Birchy North is not just a scattered set of high samples; it has a defined sampled core and a clear plan for initial drilling. Wolverine appears even larger in plain view, with a magnetic high measuring 7 km long by up to 1 km wide and surface sampling returning up to 0.14% DTR nickel across about 2.4 km by 650 m.
FPX is not trying to test the entire Wolverine feature at once. The initial drilling focuses on the higher-grade sampled core, which is the more disciplined starting point. That does not guarantee success, but it does suggest the company is trying to answer the most important question first: whether the surface awaruite signals carry beneath the regolith.
The main caution remains the same: geophysics can create confidence that field conditions do not fully support, and surface sampling is not a resource. Good sampling raises the probability of success; it does not prove economic mineralization.
What Could Move the Stock-and What Would End the Story
For now, Advocate still looks like a secondary plot within FPX's broader nickel story. That is also why a modestly positive result could matter more than expected. If the first holes show that surface awaruite signals continue downhole, investors have a reason to upgrade the property from promising target to credible program, especially since management has said successful results would warrant a larger follow-up program.
The upside path
A few good results would not need to prove a full deposit to matter. They would only need to show that the surface nickel is not just window dressing. If that happens, even a solid intermediate result could pull the stock ahead of the current geologic understanding.

What would weaken the story

What the cap-table activity suggests
Not perfectly, but somewhat, the incentives appear aligned. FPX has repurchased 720,000 shares under its buyback, which can suggest management sees value in buying back stock. At the same time, it has granted 5,305,000 stock options to directors, officers, and employees. The read is simple: the team has reason to want a discovery, but investors should still put more weight on drill core than on option tables.
What to watch next
Keep it simple. The next important evidence is the core. If it shows awaruite-rich zones beneath or near the sampled areas, the target just got more credible. If broad sections of the drill program come back empty, the surface story was more promising than the deposit potential.
