Fiera's Q2 Looks Stable-But CAD 9B of Outflows May Keep FSZ Near Its Floor

AUM grew, but revenue and flows tell the harder story
On first glance, Fiera looks stable. CAD 163.5 billion of AUM is a large balance sheet, and it grew 2.1% sequentially. But in asset management, ending AUM is not the same as healthy demand. The cleaner signal is revenue: total revenue fell 4.8% year over year, which suggests the fee base is still under pressure despite the bigger headline balance sheet.
That also helps explain the stock reaction. FSZFSZ-- was trading around CAD 4.84 in pre-market trading after the release, not far above its CAD 4.59 low in the 52-week range. If investors focus too much on AUM growth and not enough on fees, the market may still have more of the quarter's weakness left to price in.
Fiera's AUM growth masked weak public-market demand
Market gains offset outflows, but they did not fix the fee base
The AUM headline looks okay because market appreciation more than offset net outflows. That is important: rising markets can support the ending balance even when clients are still pulling money elsewhere.
Fiera still reported CAD 2.2 billion of public-market net outflows, while sub-advised outflows reached CAD 5.3 billion. Management also flagged a further CAD 1.5 billion transfer to Pinestone and a roughly CAD 500 million equity-mandate redemption in the third quarter. At the same time, lower average public-market AUM and an unfavorable asset mix weighed on base management fees. In other words, the quarter was not just about today's ending AUM; it was about where assets were during the quarter and whether the product mix supported fees.
Better performance helps, but it does not replace inflows
There are some constructive points. most large cap equity strategies outperforming benchmarks and 91% of fixed-income AUM beat their benchmarks over the past year. Fiera also noted new platform approvals and net inflows from relationships established within the last 18 months, which is a positive sign for distribution.
Still, the key question remains whether that product quality and platform access can turn into steadier inflows before fee pressure builds further.

What matters in the next quarter
Watch for: - Revenue to stop falling as average public-market AUM and mix stabilize - Third-quarter flows to become less dependent on market gains - Cost discipline to hold, with SG&A down 5.5% year to date and adjusted EBITDA margin near 27%
If those signs do not improve, the stock may remain close to its recent range.
Private markets are the clearest constructive signal
Why investors are focusing on the segment
Public markets remain the larger revenue base, and the demand signal there is still weak. Private markets are smaller-CAD 22.3 billion of end-period Private Markets AUM-but that is precisely why the segment matters now. It is one of the few parts of the business showing real operating momentum while public-market flows remain under pressure.
The private-markets numbers look more constructive
This was more than a stable quarter for the segment. Fiera reported roughly CAD 100 million in new mandates, more than CAD 115 million in net inflows, and CAD 500 million deployed during the quarter, with a CAD 1.9 billion pipeline of undeployed capital. That is the kind of activity investors want to see: new wins, incoming capital, and fees tied to assets being put to work.
Demand was also strongest in real estate and private credit, including a new note feeder for life insurers. That matters because those products tend to be more client-specific and sticky.
What would support a better valuation
Private markets will not erase the public-market and sub-advised outflows on their own. But if the segment keeps building momentum while the public franchise stabilizes, investors can start to underwrite a less cyclical growth path.
Watch for: - Another quarter of new mandates and net inflows in private markets - Continued conversion from the CAD 1.9 billion undeployed pipeline - More wins in real estate and private credit, where demand appears strongest
If that happens before public flows fully recover, FSZ may stop looking like a floor trade.
FSZ near support makes the next quarter more important than the last one
At CAD 4.84 in pre-market trading, FSZ is close enough to support that the next few weeks matter more than another routine recap of the quarter. The main test is straightforward: do management's known flow hits clear, and can earnings show enough resilience to suggest the pressure is temporary rather than structural?
The next scorecard
- Watch for the CAD 1.5 billion transfer to PineStone and the roughly CAD 500 million equity-mandate redemption in the third quarter. If those occur and revenue holds up with adjusted EBITDA margin stable at 27%, the market may view the situation as a timing issue rather than a deeper fee-base problem.
- Track whether private markets keep converting what it has already won-new mandates, inflows, and a CAD 1.9 billion undeployed pipeline-because that is a clean indicator of whether product demand is improving.
- Treat CAD 4.84 as a practical signpost. If FSZ breaks cleanly below that level, the market may be signaling that the fee base is still soft. If it holds and moves higher, buyers likely think much of the bad news is already priced.
