On April 14, 2022, Musk proposed to buy Twitter for $54.20 per share, for a total of $43 billion, claiming that the social media company needs to transform and become a private company. The offer represents a 38% premium to the closing price on April 1, the previous trade in which Musk publicly bought the number of shares in Twitter. Musk has previously bought a 9.2% stake in Twitter for $3 billion, becoming Twitter's largest shareholder.
