The company owns and operates the National Gas Transmission System in the UK and is responsible for balancing the needs of day-to-day electricity. The company's network includes approximately 7,660 kilometers (4,760 miles) of high-pressure pipes and 23 compressor stations. The electricity industry connects homes and businesses through transmission and distribution networks. Power companies buy electricity from power stations and sell it to consumers, paying for the network transmission used.
