Hallador Energy Company changed its name from Hallador Petroleum to Hallador Energy in December 2009. The company was founded in Colorado in 1949 by its predecessor. The largest part of Hallador Energy's business is dedicated to the coal mining industry in Indiana, serving the power generation industry through Sunrise Coal LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company. The company also owns 40% of Savoy Energy Partners and 50% of Sunrise Energy LLC. Savoy Energy Partners is a private oil and gas (O & G) exploration and production (E & P) company operating in Michigan and Sunrise Energy LLC is a private oil and gas exploration and production company operating in Indiana. The company accounts for its investments in Savoy and Sunrise Energy using the equity method. Historically, through its Denver operations, the company has also leased oil and gas exploration rights with the intention of selling its prospects to third parties and retaining an overwhelming mining concession interest (ORRI) or interest-bearing oil and gas exploration rights.
