Alliance Resource Partners, L.p. is a diversified producer and coal marketer primarily serving utility and industrial users in the United States. The company started mining operations in 1971. Since then, it has grown into a single coal producer in the eastern United States through acquisitions and internal development. The company operates 11 underground mining sites in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland and West Virginia. The company is building a new mine in southern Indiana, a coal loading terminal along the Ohio River under Mount Vernon in Indiana, and a ground facility at the new Birch Coal Mine in southern Illinois. The company was established in May 1999 and completed its initial public offering on August 19, 1999, acquiring certain coal production and marketing assets of Alliance Resources Holdings.
