The claim: buyers are lining up at a premium. The reality: no names, no terms, no business model.

On Meta's Q2 earnings call on July 29, Mark Zuckerberg told investors that a "large number" of companies are offering to buy Meta's computing capacity at a "significant premium" over what we paid for it. He said selling all of it would be "foolish" because Meta can build intelligence on top of the hardware, a value multiplier that compounds.

The Buyers Are Ghosts

Its competitors face a completely different reality. Google Cloud grew 82% year-over-year to $24.8 billion in Q2 2026. AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud control roughly 68% of global cloud infrastructure. These companies have spent 20+ years building the sales teams, compliance infrastructure, API ecosystems, and enterprise relationships required to sell compute at scale.

Meta hired Dave Brown, a former senior AWS executive, to build out enterprise sales capability under the internal project name "Meta Compute." It is an acknowledgment that the company lacks the infrastructure to execute on the very monetization story Zuckerberg is pitching.

Spending $145 billion on infrastructure is not the same as building a business that generates returns from it. One is a construction project. The other requires a sales force, a customer base, and a pricing mechanism — none of which Meta currently has.

The Custom Silicon Angle Is Real, But It Doesn't Fix the Problem

Meta's partnership with Broadcom to co-develop multiple generations of MTIA custom silicon is a legitimate efficiency play. The company is rolling out more than 1 gigawatt of custom silicon, with multiple gigawatts committed. It is also deploying significant AMD chips alongside Nvidia systems.

Custom silicon reduces per-unit compute cost. It also reduces dependence on Nvidia's pricing power and accelerates. But it does not solve the fundamental question: what does Meta actually do with all this compute that generates revenue commensurate with the spend?

Zuckerberg's answer on the call was: "building intelligence." He posits that compute used to develop AI models creates a "multiple" that "compounds" the hardware value. He outlined a three-part business structure — apps, agents, enterprise services — and suggested Meta could sell business APIs, productivity services, and AI agents.

"Building intelligence" is not a monetization plan. It is a hope, dressed up as engineering inevitability, presented during a quarter where free cash flow fell to $784 million.

Meta did hire Alexandr Wang, the Scale AI founder, for a reported $14.3 billion compensation package to lead its Superintelligence Labs. Wang's team rolled out Muse Spark in April 2026. The model exists. Whether it generates revenue at scale is an entirely different question.

What This Looks Like From the Valuation Side

Meta trades at 22.15x trailing earnings, below Microsoft's 27.76x but above Alphabet's 17.75x. Its EV/EBITDA is 13.70x, the lowest among the four mega-cap tech names.

The low multiples reflect what investors already know: the market is discounting Meta's AI spending as unproven. Amazon and Alphabet's cloud businesses provide visible revenue streams from identical infrastructure investments. Meta's does not. The stock is priced as an advertising company that happens to be building data centers — not as a cloud provider, not as an AI services company, not as a compute vendor.

The market has already made its judgment. The "significant premium" story is Zuckerberg's attempt to convince it otherwise.

The Cross-Currents
