Zelensky calls for more sanctions on Russia after overnight attack
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged for additional sanctions against Russia following a record drone assault on Kyiv over the weekend. The overnight attack, which saw 273 drones fired at Ukrainian cities, is the largest of its kind since the start of the war [2].In response to the escalation, Zelensky has called for further diplomatic pressure on Russia, stating that the country is "trying to buy time" to continue its war in Ukraine [1]. Zelensky has expressed his readiness to negotiate but has also emphasized that Ukraine will not accept any unrealistic conditions from Russia.
The European Union and the UK have also announced new rounds of sanctions against Russia. The EU has blacklisted nearly 200 more oil tankers in Russia's "shadow fleet" and warned of a "tougher response" if Moscow does not agree to a truce [1]. The UK has imposed sanctions on 18 more tankers, targeting Russian military suppliers, energy exports, and financial institutions [2].
Despite these measures, the Kremlin has downplayed suggestions that negotiations are close, with Russian state news agencies citing spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying "there are no deadlines and there cannot be any" [1]. Meanwhile, Zelensky has launched a fresh round of diplomacy, speaking to Western allies to shore up support and ensure pressure on Moscow [1].
US President Donald Trump held a two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, during which Putin agreed to start direct negotiations on a ceasefire immediately. However, Zelensky accused Russia of not seriously engaging in peace talks and accused Putin of sending "empty heads" to the negotiating table [2].
Trump, however, indicated that he would not join in any new sanctions on Russia, stating that they could hinder recent progress. The US President has suggested that Russia and Ukraine conduct bilateral direct negotiations without any third-party mediators [2].
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has led to heavy fighting along the front line, with Ukraine reporting 177 clashes and claiming over 1,000 Russian casualties in 24 hours [1]. The conflict has also had significant implications for the global economy, with sanctions against Russia impacting energy markets and financial institutions.
