Zelenskiy says Ukraine has funds for three Patriot systems, looking to finance another seven
Ukraine has secured funding for three Patriot missile defense systems, with discussions ongoing to finance an additional seven, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Thursday [1]. The systems are crucial for Ukraine's defense against Russian ballistic missiles aimed at its cities.Zelenskiy confirmed that Germany has agreed to provide two systems, while Norway has agreed to provide one. The Ukrainian president is currently working with Dutch partners to secure the remaining systems [1]. This development comes after President Donald Trump announced earlier this month that billions of dollars of U.S. weapons, including Patriot missiles, would be provided to Ukraine [1].
In addition to securing air defense supplies, Ukraine faces a significant financing gap of $40 billion for the next year. Zelenskiy also mentioned that an additional $25 billion will be needed for the production of missiles, drones, and electronic warfare systems [2]. The systems are vital for holding back a numerically superior Russian force pushing forward in Ukraine's east and along a more than 1,000 km frontline [2].
The Ukrainian president also highlighted the need for additional funding to pay army salaries, as previously European countries had refused to provide such funding [2]. Zelenskiy emphasized that the Ukrainian military can be a crucial defense asset.
