Zalando's 15% Post-Results Crash: Profit Engine Strong, Growth Story Just Got Less Exciting

Zalando's drop reflects slower growth, not a broken profit story
Zalando's 15.25% drop after the update was a sharp signal that investors now want proof of profitable growth, not just headline GMV expansion. Management kept the earnings outlook broadly intact, but it also reset 2026 GMV and revenue growth to the lower half of its previous 12%–17% range. At the same time, pro forma GMV grew 4.4% in the quarter. That combination is why the stock sold off: the business still looks profitable, but the growth narrative is clearly less compelling.

The core debate is straightforward. Bulls can argue Zalando is maturing into a slower, more disciplined platform that protects margin instead of chasing volume through heavier discounting or marketing. Bears will argue that a 4.4% pro forma GMV read is harder to reconcile with the premium multiple the marketplace once commanded.
Operating quality still held up in Q2
The positive side of the quarter is that better operating discipline was not just rhetoric.
Reported growth still looked healthy
Pro forma GMV grew only 4.4%, but the reported build remained strong: group GMV rose 20.7% to €4.9 billion, while revenue reached €3.4 billion. That gap suggests the underlying marketplace and partner mix are still contributing volume, even if management is no longer guiding for fast top-line expansion.
Profitability stayed solid
Zalando also delivered €205 million in Q2 adjusted EBIT, and first-half integration synergies from ABOUT YOU exceeded €20 million. Management said its stand-alone margin improved to 6.6%, even with ABOUT YOU initially pulling the group margin down on consolidation. That points to real operating leverage rather than growth at any cost.
B2B and AI are the clearest structural upgrades
B2B is becoming a more meaningful profit contributor
B2B revenue reached €335 million, up 27.6%. That matters because it gives Zalando a higher-potential secondary engine alongside the consumer business. If this segment continues to scale, it can help support profits even when fashion demand softens.
AI adoption is showing measurable results
Zalando's AI efforts are also starting to show up in operational metrics. SCAYLE STUDIOS reached more than 100 brands within 2.5 months, cut content production time by more than 95%, and reduced costs by around 90%. That does not prove monetization on its own, but it does suggest a genuine scalability advantage.
What to watch next: - Whether B2B can sustain growth beyond this quarter's spike. - Whether integration synergies keep building toward the €40 million full-year target. - Whether tools like SCAYLE STUDIOS deepen partner stickiness rather than only improving content economics.
The post-crash question is valuation versus execution
After the selloff, the debate is no longer about shock value. It is whether a stock still trading around 55x earnings after the drop has finished repricing, or whether the market still wants more confirmation that slower growth can coexist with durable profitability.
Bull case
A rebound is more likely if Zalando proves the slowdown is manageable rather than structural. The clearest path back is steadier Q3 and Q4 execution, with profit targets intact and no need to sacrifice margin discipline just to chase growth.
Bear case
More downside becomes more plausible if sneaker softness is actually broader demand fatigue. In that scenario, current profits may not be enough to defend a premium multiple. The key test is whether Zalando can grow more slowly without losing working-capital discipline. If inventory stops following the plan to reduce inventory year over year by year-end, that would be a warning sign that the company is pushing too hard on margin at the expense of demand balance.
What would invalidate the cautious view?
A more constructive setup would require growth to re-accelerate while margins continue to improve. That would suggest the business is not just more disciplined, but also returning to a stronger growth regime.
