Yum! Brands Names Chris Turner CEO, Gibbs Retires

Yum! Brands, Inc. has announced the promotion of its Chief Financial Officer, Chris Turner, to the position of Chief Executive Officer, effective October 1. This move continues a trend of CFOs transitioning into CEO roles within the corporate leadership landscape. Turner will succeed David Gibbs, who announced his retirement in March after serving as CEO since 2020 and spending 37 years with the company in various leadership roles, including president and CFO. Gibbs played a pivotal role in transforming Yum into a capital-light, pure-play franchisor.
Both Turner and Gibbs expressed mutual admiration and respect for each other's contributions. Turner, who joined Yum in 2019 as CFO and later expanded his role to include chief franchise officer, has a strong background in senior roles at PepsiCo and McKinsey & Company. Gibbs praised Turner's deep knowledge of the business, strong values, and commitment to growth, while Turner acknowledged Gibbs as a mentor and industry icon.
Yum! Brands, known for its iconic brands such as KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut, has seen significant growth, rising 10 spots on the Fortune 500 list and earning $7.5 billion in revenue in 2024. Turner's new role will involve continuing the company's success, particularly with brands like Taco Bell, which achieved $1 billion in operating profit for the first time in 2024. Analysts expect a smooth leadership transition, with Gibbs staying on as an advisor until the end of 2026. Turner has been instrumental in Yum's technology initiatives, including the Byte AI restaurant management platform.
Despite the positive outlook, Turner faces challenges such as improving KFC and Pizza Hut sales in the U.S., where both brands face strong competition. The company will continue investing in Taco Bell and KFC’s international growth, even amidst challenging economic conditions. Yum’s shares are considered fairly valued at $145, with no change to its capital allocation rating. The company has not yet announced a new CFO to replace Turner, and an external search is likely.
