New York City Aims to Lead Global Crypto Race with New Council

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish New York as the global leader in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. At the inaugural NYC Crypto Summit held at Gracie Mansion, Adams introduced the Crypto Digital Assets Advisory Council, a body aimed at positioning New York as the "Crypto Capital of the World."

Adams, who previously made headlines by accepting his first three paychecks in Bitcoin and Ethereum, emphasized that his vision is not merely about following trends but about leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance public services. "We want to use the technology of tomorrow to better serve New Yorkers today," he stated.

New York City's Chief Technology Officer, Matthew Fraser, highlighted the potential of blockchain technology in securing crucial public records such as birth and death certificates. He promised that this innovation would bring improved efficiency and security to public services. The council, comprising crypto experts, will meet regularly to develop policies and recommendations, with further details expected soon.

The summit attracted a diverse range of industry leaders, including family offices, technology startups, and fintech companies. Richard Hecker of Traction and Scale noted the presence of unicorn startups, while Andrew Durgee, co-CEO of Republic, announced his firm's commitment to New York despite regulatory challenges. Adams, likening himself to Star Trek’s Captain Kirk, called on attendees to join his mission, acknowledging the industry's past struggles and predicting a bright future.

Adams' strong advocacy for cryptocurrency has positioned New York in a competitive race to become the global hub for blockchain innovation.
