The increase in water level is primarily due to the high volumes of water released from the Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages every hour. The Hathnikund barrage is releasing around 127,030 cusecs of water, the highest this season, while the Wazirabad barrage is releasing 45,620 cusecs of water every hour [2].
The Central Water Commission has issued an advisory stating that the Yamuna is likely to reach 206 meters by Monday, August 19, crossing the danger mark of 205.33 meters. Around 7 pm on Sunday, the river crossed the warning level, reaching the mark of 204.60 meters at the Old Railway Bridge [1].
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall for 10 coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh on Monday, August 18. The districts under red alert are Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Kakinada, East Godavari, Konaseema, West Godavari, NTR, and Guntur [1].
In addition, the Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered the closure of all educational institutions in the Jammu region due to inclement weather conditions. Sixty-eight persons lost their lives and 122 suffered injuries in three cloudbursts in the Chisoti village of the Kishtwar district and Jodh Ghati and Janglote areas of the Kathua district during the past four days [1].
