Ripple has intensified its warnings to
investors about a surge in fraudulent schemes on YouTube, as scammers exploit the cryptocurrency’s recent price rally and growing public interest. According to multiple alerts issued by the company and its CEO, Brad Garlinghouse, bad actors are leveraging AI-generated deepfakes and hijacked accounts to impersonate executives and promote fake XRP giveaways. These scams often involve altering footage of company leaders or hijacking official accounts to lure victims into sending funds for "airdrops" or "investments" that do not exist [1].The rise in scams has coincided with XRP reaching an all-time high in July 2025, drawing attention to its ecosystem as on-chain activity surges. Garlinghouse emphasized that Ripple’s leadership would never solicit user funds, yet scammers have increasingly used altered videos to mimic the company’s messaging. A notable example includes a deepfake of Garlinghouse promoting a fraudulent airdrop, which was later exposed by Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, David Schwartz [2]. The company also noted that imposters are stealing official YouTube accounts, updating content to mimic Ripple’s branding, and directing users to fake investment opportunities [3].
The pattern mirrors broader trends in crypto fraud, with TRM Labs reporting over $9 billion lost to scams in 2022 alone. Garlinghouse attributed the recent uptick to the token’s regulatory progress, including a partial victory against the U.S. SEC in 2023, which has spurred both investor confidence and malicious activity. Ripple’s advisory urges users to report suspicious accounts and avoid sharing XRP with unverified entities offering free tokens or high-yield returns.
The warnings highlight the evolving tactics of fraudsters in the crypto space, particularly the use of AI to create convincing deepfakes. Unlike traditional scams, these attacks exploit trust in well-known figures and brands, making them harder to detect. Ripple’s repeated alerts suggest that the issue is not isolated to a single platform but reflects a systemic challenge as XRP gains mainstream traction.
Scammers are also employing social engineering techniques, such as phishing links and fake job offers, to direct users toward fraudulent activities. For instance, some schemes replicate real interviews and append scam wallet addresses, while others use AI-generated voiceovers and visual overlays to create deceptive content. Ripple’s legal battle with the SEC—still pending a $50 million settlement—has further amplified public interest in XRP, creating an environment where misinformation and FOMO (fear of missing out) are exploited [4].
Users are advised to verify the authenticity of accounts and content through Ripple’s official channels, as the company has no role in any "giveaway" initiatives. The firm’s stance aligns with broader industry efforts to combat fraud, though the rapid pace of technological innovation—such as AI-generated media—poses ongoing risks. Garlinghouse’s public warnings underscore the need for heightened vigilance among investors, particularly as the line between legitimate promotions and scams becomes increasingly blurred.
The XRP price has seen significant volatility recently, surging over 42% in the last 30 days before retreating 12% in the past 24 hours. Despite the pullback, the token’s 24-hour trading volume reached $16.66 billion, reflecting heightened market activity. Ripple’s proactive stance in flagging these threats underscores the importance of user education in mitigating risks associated with digital assets.
