Ripple’s chairman Chris Larsen recently praised the Bitcoin network’s progress towards adopting greener energy sources. This acknowledgment came during the 2025 Bitcoin conference, where Ripple donated the “Skull of Satoshi” artwork to the Bitcoin community. Larsen’s gesture was aimed at fostering better relations between Ripple and the Bitcoin community, highlighting a shared goal of environmental sustainability.
Larsen’s involvement in promoting greener energy for Bitcoin dates back to 2023 when he personally funded the “Change the Code, Not the Climate” campaign. This initiative, backed by Canadian artist Benjamin Von Wong, advocated for Bitcoin to transition from its energy-intensive proof-of-work system to a more environmentally friendly model. Although the campaign did not achieve its intended outcome, Larsen remained optimistic about the future of Bitcoin’s energy transition.
According to reports, approximately 50% of Bitcoin’s energy consumption now comes from renewable sources, including wind, hydropower, and nuclear energy. Additionally, miners have started utilizing waste gas projects, converting flared natural gas into fuel for their operations. This shift indicates that Bitcoin can improve its environmental impact without altering its underlying code, marking a significant step towards sustainability.
Ripple’s donation of the “Skull of Satoshi” sculpture at the Bitcoin conference was more than just a symbolic gesture. It represented Ripple’s effort to reduce tensions between XRP supporters and Bitcoin enthusiasts, who have historically clashed over issues such as transaction fees, speed, and environmental concerns. By donating an artwork designed to provoke discussion, Ripple aimed to encourage dialogue rather than conflict.
Ripple’s CEO, Brad Garlinghouse, also emphasized the importance of unity within the crypto community. He called for clearer regulatory frameworks and urged industry players to focus on serving the unbanked. Garlinghouse highlighted the common ground between XRP and Bitcoin supporters, suggesting that collaboration is essential in the face of external challenges such as regulatory pressures and market skepticism.
Ripple’s actions at the conference set a precedent for how rival crypto networks can interact. The donation of the “Skull of Satoshi” demonstrated that even fierce competitors can find common ground, particularly when it comes to addressing environmental concerns. This move underscores the potential for big ideas and symbolic gestures to bridge divides within the crypto community, fostering a more collaborative and sustainable future.
