Ripple CTO David Schwartz has issued a warning about a deepfake AI video that is falsely promoting an XRP airdrop. The video, which features Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, has been circulating rapidly across social media platforms. The video claims to celebrate Ripple's victory in a lawsuit and offers an XRP rewards program as a way to thank the community for their support. However, Schwartz has identified the video as an AI-generated scam, emphasizing that it is a clear attempt to deceive users.
The deepfake video capitalizes on the optimistic sentiment surrounding the Ripple vs. SEC case. Scammers are exploiting the community's anticipation of a positive outcome to lure unsuspecting individuals with promises of a fake XRP airdrop. Schwartz's warning came in response to the video, where he stated, “Obvious scam is obvious. It’s an AI-generated fake.”
This is not the first time scammers have taken advantage of Ripple's legal successes to deceive the community. Previous victories in the lawsuit have been followed by an increase in scammer activity, with fake news and phishing schemes emerging to capitalize on the community's optimism. The latest deepfake video is just another example of this pattern, highlighting the need for caution within the XRP community.
In August 2024, Ripple scored a significant win against the SEC when a judge ordered a $125 million penalty, far less than the $2 billion sought by the SEC. This victory was followed by scams promising fake XRP airdrops and giveaways. Ripple warned the community about the rising scams, noting that Ripple and its executives would never ask users to send funds anywhere.
Similarly, in July 2023, when Ripple secured a partial victory with a judge's ruling that XRP is not a security, scammers quickly emerged. Schwartz debunked the anticipations of an airdrop, stating that there were no airdrops, giveaways, or special offers associated with the ruling. The community was urged to be cautious and vigilant against such scams.
The spread of the deepfake video underscores the importance of verifying information and being cautious of fraudulent activities. As the XRP community awaits the outcome of the Ripple vs. SEC case, it is crucial for users to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to scams. Schwartz's warning serves as a reminder to the community to be cautious and to verify any information before taking action.
