Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has issued urgent warnings to
holders amid a surge in YouTube-based scams exploiting deepfake videos, hijacked social media accounts, and fake giveaway schemes. Fraudsters are rebranding hijacked YouTube channels to mimic Ripple’s official profile, including altered names, images, and content falsely attributed to Garlinghouse, creating confusion among users. These scams, which involve fake livestreams and phishing attempts, aim to trick investors into transferring XRP to fraudulent wallets under the guise of “giving back” larger amounts. confirmed a rise in such attacks, emphasizing that neither the company nor its executives will ever solicit XRP or other tokens. “Ripple or our execs will NEVER ask you to send us XRP. Stay vigilant,” the company stated in a verified X post [1].Garlinghouse highlighted the recurring pattern of these scams, noting that they intensify during periods of market optimism for XRP. In a July 23 tweet, he urged the community to remain cautious, stating, “Like clockwork, with success and market rallies, scammers ramp up their attacks on the crypto community.” The timing aligns with XRP’s recent price rally, which has drawn new investors and heightened their vulnerability to exploitation. Scammers leverage high-quality visuals, simulated engagement, and recycled footage of Ripple executives to create deceptive campaigns, complicating detection [2].
Ripple has taken steps to combat these attacks, including issuing detailed advisories and collaborating with platforms like YouTube to remove fraudulent content. The company reiterated that it does not endorse unsolicited promotions or direct wallet transfers, urging users to verify all communications through official channels. Garlinghouse reiterated this message, advising users to ignore giveaway offers, double-check account authenticity, and report suspicious activity. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” he wrote [3].
Market reactions to the warnings have been mixed. On July 11, XRP prices dropped by 10.22% amid heightened concerns over scam activity, reflecting investor unease. However, Garlinghouse’s on-chain movements have added complexity to the narrative. Data revealed he moved $175 million worth of XRP in a single week, sparking speculation about potential market manipulation. Ripple clarified that these transactions were unrelated to the scam warnings, attributing them to standard treasury management practices [4].
The resurgence of scams coincides with Ripple’s ongoing legal challenges, particularly its litigation with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). While the case remains unresolved, the scams have further complicated the company’s public relations. Garlinghouse’s direct engagement with the community has been seen as a strategic effort to rebuild trust, yet critics argue that Ripple’s responses lack concrete solutions to prevent impersonation attacks. Analysts note that XRP’s high liquidity and growing institutional interest make it a frequent target for scammers, underscoring broader vulnerabilities in the crypto ecosystem [5].
The situation highlights the persistent challenges of combating digital fraud in a rapidly evolving sector. As Ripple advocates for stronger platform accountability, the focus remains on mitigating immediate risks while addressing systemic issues in digital identity verification. Users are advised to prioritize due diligence, remain skeptical of unsolicited offers, and leverage official resources to verify authenticity. With scams expected to persist, the message from Ripple and its leadership is clear: vigilance and education remain the best defenses in a high-risk landscape.
