Xi says China, Russia to deepen coop in all areas: Xinhua
Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Vyacheslav Volodin, the chairman of Russia's lower house of parliament, the State Duma, in Beijing on Tuesday. The meeting, reported by Xinhua, comes amidst ongoing sanctions pressure, including U.S. efforts to persuade China to halt Russian oil imports [1].
The discussions focused on countering sanctions and external interference, reflecting the growing importance of the China-Russia relationship. Volodin, who arrived in China on Monday, had previously stated that he would address these issues during his talks in Beijing [1].
The meeting is part of Xi's broader diplomatic efforts, as he is set to attend the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. The summit, scheduled for August 31 and September 1, will be a key event in China's head-of-state diplomacy this year. During the summit, Xi will chair the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO and deliver keynote speeches. He is expected to elaborate on China's vision for the SCO, announce new measures for high-quality development, and propose methods for safeguarding the post-WWII international order [2].
The SCO Summit will also see Xi host a welcome banquet and bilateral events for participating leaders. The meeting is expected to result in the signing of a declaration with other SCO member states, the approval of a development strategy for the next 10 years, and the issuance of statements marking the 80th anniversaries of the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations. Additionally, outcome documents on strengthening security, economic, people-to-people, and cultural cooperation are anticipated [2].
