Robert Keele, the head of legal at Elon Musk's AI startup xAI, has resigned after just over a year in the role, citing work-life balance concerns. Keele, who joined xAI in May 2024, expressed his desire to spend more time with his two young children. His departure adds to a growing list of executive turnover across Musk's businesses. Keele cited philosophical differences with Musk and the need to balance his family and job as reasons for his resignation.

Keele's tenure at xAI coincided with a period of remarkable expansion for the company. Shortly after his arrival, xAI secured a massive $6 billion Series B funding round, backed by prominent investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital. This funding round valued the company at $24 billion [1]. The company's growth trajectory continued with the acquisition of X, Musk's social media company, in March 2025. According to Musk, this deal valued xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion, further cementing xAI's position as a major player in the AI industry [2].

Taking over Keele's role is Lily Lim, who brings a unique background to the position. Before her legal career, Lim worked as a rocket scientist at NASA, specializing in spacecraft navigation for a Venus surface mapping project. She joined xAI in late 2024 as a privacy and intellectual property specialist, following legal stints at various firms and companies, including ServiceNow [2].

Keele's resignation appears to be part of a larger pattern of executive turnover across Elon Musk's companies. Recent departures include X CEO Linda Yaccarino and several top executives at Tesla. This trend aligns with Musk's well-known expectation for employees to work long hours, sometimes even sleeping at the office, as was observed during the acquisition of X (formerly Twitter) [2].

The issue of work-life balance extends beyond Musk's companies. Some newer tech firms, particularly in the AI sector, seem to be adopting similar high-pressure work cultures. For instance, AI coding startup Cognition has announced plans to aggressively reduce its team size, with its CEO explicitly stating a disbelief in work-life balance [2].

Keele's departure from xAI underscores the ongoing debate about sustainable work practices in the tech industry, especially within rapidly growing AI companies. As these firms continue to push the boundaries of innovation, the challenge of balancing professional demands with personal well-being remains a critical issue for employees and leadership alike.
