Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI, has announced significant layoffs, with approximately 500 workers from its data annotation team losing their jobs on Friday night. This move represents about one-third of xAI's 1,500-person data annotation team. The company is pivoting its focus to specialist AI tutors and scaling back general AI tutor roles [1].The layoffs were communicated through emails sent to staff on September 12, with access to company systems immediately cut off. Affected workers will remain on payroll until the end of their contracts or November 30. The restructuring is part of a strategic shift to prioritize specialist tutors, as stated in the company's email [1].
The layoffs come after several senior staff had their accounts deactivated earlier in the week. Employees were also asked to complete tests assessing skills in various domains, including STEM, coding, finance, medicine, and Grok's "personality and model behavior" [2]. These assessments were intended to help sort staff into new roles.
Despite the layoffs, xAI has posted on X (formerly Twitter) that it is hiring and intends to grow its specialist tutor team by "10X." The company aims to expand its workforce across various domains to push Grok's development forward [1].
The data annotation team, which played a central role in developing the Grok chatbot, is the largest team at xAI. It helps teach Grok to understand the world by contextualizing and categorizing raw data [2].
