World Launches US, Partners Visa, Match Group
Sam Altman’s crypto-tied digital identity project World, previously known as Worldcoin, has officially launched in the United States. The project, which aims to verify human identities in the era of artificial intelligence, has debuted in six key innovation hubs: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco.
World offers a crypto token, Worldcoin (WLD), to individuals who verify their identity using a spherical device called The Orb. This device scans a user’s face and eyes to create a World ID on the company’s platform, which can be used to verify that a user is human and to sign in to integrated platforms such as Minecraft, reddit, Telegram, shopify, and Discord.
In addition to its US rollout, World announced a partnership with visa for a “World Visa card,” set to launch later this year. This card will allow users who have scanned their eyeballs to make payments using wld tokens and other cryptocurrencies.
Match Group, the online dating giant that owns popular apps like Tinder, Hinge, Match.com, and Plenty of Fish, will also begin a pilot program testing out World ID for its apps. The goal is to provide dating app users with a means of verifying that the profiles they interact with represent real people seeking genuine connections.
World has also established partnerships with prediction market startup Kalshi and decentralized lending platform Morpho. These collaborations aim to enhance the utility and reach of the World ID system.
Altman co-founded the project in 2019 under the name Worldcoin, with the vision of creating a global identity verification system using blockchain technology to combat fraud and bots. The project rebranded to World in 2024 and currently has 26 million users globally, with 12 million of them verified through Orb scans.
World’s launch in the US marks a significant milestone in the project’s journey. The integration of World ID with major platforms and the upcoming World Visa card partnership with Visa highlight the project’s ambition to become a leading player in the digital identity verification space. The project’s focus on using biometric data to verify human identities aligns with the growing need for secure and reliable identity verification in the digital age.
