Former rugby league legend Tāwera Nikau's life took a dramatic turn when he lost his leg in a motorcycle accident nearly 20 years ago. The tragedy was compounded by the loss of his wife Letitia, who died by suicide just a few years earlier. Nikau found himself questioning whether he would ever feel true happiness again. However, with the support of his family and community, he has rebuilt his life, finding purpose and meaning through giving back to his family, community, and the environment.

At 58, Nikau is a passionate advocate for his family, community, and the environment. He serves on the New Zealand Rugby League Board of Directors, acts as a selector for the Kiwis, and is a highly sought-after motivational speaker. His experiences overcoming adversity and mental health challenges resonate with audiences. Nikau is also deeply involved in environmentalism, serving as co-chair of the Endangered Species Foundation (Tāngaro Tuia te Ora), which tackles ecological crises such as polluted rivers and sand mining threats.

Nikau's journey from rock bottom to role model is a testament to his resilience and the power of community support. He believes that everyone faces challenges, but it's how you respond that matters. "You have to ask for help, hold on to optimism, and eventually the sun will come out again," he says. "But you can't do it alone – you have to surround yourself with your people."

Nikau's commitment to his community and environment is evident in his work with Māori farmers through the Fonterra network and the Rural Support Trust. He is also involved in the restoration of wetlands and other ecological projects. His deep respect for the land and his commitment to mātauranga Māori (traditional knowledge) guide his environmental work.

Despite his numerous commitments, Nikau finds joy in his close-knit family. With his wife Hayley by his side, he has found total contentment. "I’m just very grateful that I have a beautiful wife, happy children, and healthy grandchildren, and every morning I’m thankful for what I have," he says.

Nikau's story serves as an inspiration for those facing adversity. His journey demonstrates that with the right mindset and support, one can rebuild their life and make a positive impact on their community and the environment.
