WSSC Water has issued a boil water advisory affecting parts of Prince George's County, Maryland, in response to a water main break that occurred near the Cheverly Metro station late Friday night. The incident involved a 16-inch diameter water main, discovered at 5540 Columbia Park in Hyattsville. Crews have successfully halted the water flow at the site, and the repair process is set to commence; however, precise timelines for the completion of these repairs remain undisclosed.
This advisory impacts approximately 11,200 residential customers within the towns of Cheverly, Seat Pleasant, and Capitol Heights, as well as other surrounding communities. Despite the break, residential customers still have access to water services. Authorities are urging individuals in the affected regions to boil their water for at least one minute prior to usage for certain purposes. This precautionary step is necessary to ensure the water's safety when used for drinking, brushing teeth, washing fruits and vegetables, preparing baby food and formula, making ice, and providing water to pets.
A water distribution center for residents impacted by this advisory has been established at the Judith P. Hoyer Early Childhood Center in Cheverly, which will remain operational from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For those seeking further clarity on whether their area is impacted, an interactive map has been made available for customers to locate their addresses within the affected zones.
To maintain public health standards, WSSC Water has outlined specific instructions for the use of boiled water. These include discarding any stored water, drinks, or ice created recently, as well as adhering to the guidelines concerning the use of boiled water. Importantly, water used for bathing does not require boiling, provided it is not consumed.
This situation has progressed overnight, leading to initial reports of low water pressure among area residents. Repair teams have been deployed to address the issue and are currently working to evaluate the condition of the broken pipe. While an exact timeline for the restoration of service cannot yet be provided, updates will be continually disseminated by WSSC Water as more information becomes available.
The priority remains ensuring that water consumed within the affected areas poses no threat to public health. As sampling and testing of the water supply is conducted, the boil water advisory will be lifted only once results confirm the water's safety for normal use. Residents are advised to stay informed and adhere to any updates provided by WSSC Water to ensure compliance with safety measures.
As new developments occur and more information becomes available, WSSC Water commits to regular updates to keep customers informed and ensure that safe, potable water is restored efficiently. Residents are encouraged to monitor these updates closely and to exercise the recommended precautions diligently.
