A US guided missile cruiser, USS Lake Erie, has entered the Panama Canal and is heading towards the Caribbean, following a US deployment of warships near Venezuela's coast. The US claims the deployment is an anti-drug trafficking operation, but Venezuela has accused President Nicolas Maduro of leading a drug cartel and mobilized its military in response. The USS Lake Erie is based in San Diego, California, and displaces 9,800 tons.
