Recent market attention has focused on Walmart (WMT), which saw a 4.29% increase in stock price on February 25. This climb is partly attributed to strong performance in its latest earnings report, highlighting significant growth in international markets, particularly in China. The report for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025 and the entire year illustrates that China has become a driving force for Walmart's global revenue growth.
Walmart's net sales in China reached $20.3 billion, a 27.7% year-over-year increase. Sam's Club, a key factor in Walmart's success in China, saw a sales surge during the 2025 Spring Festival, with year-over-year growth exceeding 25%. As of January 2025, Sam's Club operates 53 stores in China, contributing to 68% of Walmart China's annual net sales, thanks to their integrated online and offline strategies.
Embracing efficient operations and technological advancement has bolstered Walmart’s e-commerce net sales in China by 34% in fiscal 2025. Walmart's strategy includes partnerships with major domestic platforms to penetrate the online market deeply, improving logistics and supply chain efficiencies to meet consumer demands for high-quality products while offsetting the disadvantages of traditional hypermarkets.
However, challenges remain. Despite Sam's Club's impressive performance, Walmart's hypermarket business globally, and particularly in China, is undergoing adjustments. The closure of unprofitable stores, such as a longstanding hypermarket in Hangzhou, points to a shift in strategic focus.
Walmart’s efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into its operations reflect a shift toward becoming a technologically-driven retail giant. Walmart aims to enhance operational efficiency, optimize inventory management, and improve customer experience, partially through the acquisition of smart TV brand Vizio to boost advertising capabilities across its retail network.
Looking ahead, Walmart's strategic initiatives and technological adoptions are beginning to pay off, suggesting a positive long-term outlook in the global market. Investors should monitor Walmart's progress in emerging markets and its advancements in technology application, serving as a foundation for future investment decisions.
