The Wallabies lost the first test against the British and Irish Lions 27-19. The Lions established a 10-0 lead early in the game and the Wallabies were unable to recover. Despite a late rally, the Wallabies were outclassed and the Lions will head to the MCG for the second test as heavy favorites.
The British and Irish Lions have secured a dominant 27-19 victory over Australia in their first Test match of the series, played at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on July 19, 2025. The Lions, led by Andy Farrell, demonstrated a superior performance across all facets of the game, establishing a commanding lead early and holding it despite a late Australian fightback. The match began with the Lions scoring the opening points through Finn Russell's boot, putting them onto the scoreboard. The Lions continued to dominate the first half, scoring tries through Sione Tuipulotu, Tom Curry, and Dan Sheehan, with Russell adding nine points from the kicking tee. Max Jorgensen crossed for Australia in the first half, but the Wallabies struggled to mount a meaningful challenge.
In the second half, the Wallabies improved their performance after bringing on replacements Carlo Tizzano and Tate McDermott. However, the Lions' dominance in the first hour was too much for the Wallabies to overcome. Tizzano and McDermott's tries were not enough to prevent the Lions from securing a comfortable victory.
Lions captain Maro Itoje expressed satisfaction with the win, stating, "We're delighted with the win. The game was a tough test match. I thought we started well in the first half. We played a lot of good stuff. Then the second half was a bit to and fro from both sides. I think that's a good position for us to be in" [1].
The Lions' victory sets the stage for their second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where they will be heavy favorites. The Wallabies, despite their late rally, were unable to recover from the early lead and will need to significantly improve their performance if they hope to win the series.
