WAEC Denies Cancellation of 2025 WASSCE Amid False Claims

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates will be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025. This announcement comes several weeks after the conclusion of the examination nationwide. The WAEC Nigeria Public Affairs Head, Moyosola Adesina, confirmed via the council's official social media handle that the marking of scripts has been completed and candidates should await the official release of their results.

In addition to the result release date, WAEC has also addressed circulating reports that the recently concluded examination had been cancelled. The council clarified that a false statement circulated on social media platforms on Saturday, July 19, claimed that both the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC had cancelled the examination due to widespread examination malpractice, leakage of question papers, and unauthorized digital dissemination of exam materials. WAEC unequivocally stated that the spurious press statement did not emanate from the council and that the examination has not been cancelled.

WAEC noted that the false claim is being orchestrated by individuals aiming to confuse and tarnish the image of the board, causing unnecessary panic among candidates. The council emphasized that all official information is disseminated through its verified social media handles and accredited media platforms. The 2025 WASSCE, held between April 24 and June 20, 2025, recorded a total of 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools, including 979,228 males and 994,025 females.

In response to the false claims, the Federal Ministry of Education also rejected reports that the 2025 WAEC examinations had been cancelled due to widespread malpractice. The ministry stated that the examinations had been successfully concluded, with only a few isolated incidents of malpractice promptly addressed. The ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations are progressing smoothly, with no reported cases of malpractice. The ministry urged the public to disregard any unauthorized press releases, emphasizing that official communications are available through verified channels.

The ministry also noted that anyone found spreading false information will be reported to the appropriate security agencies for investigation and possible prosecution. The ministry remains committed to upholding the integrity, credibility, and orderly conduct of all public examinations, working closely with examination bodies to strengthen monitoring and enforcement mechanisms.
