Vitalik Buterin: Centralized Sequencers Boost Blockchain Security
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently shared his insights on the role of centralized sequencers in the blockchain ecosystem during a text AMA on the Tako platform. He highlighted several advantages, such as enhanced security against threats like front-running and the facilitation of instant protection for user transactions. Buterin emphasized that the transition of traditional applications into blockchain environments is simplified by the ability of servers to operate as sequencers.
However, Buterin noted that while centralized sequencers can mitigate certain risks, such as user censorship, through decentralized blockchain features, they cannot be deemed a singular solution. Mechanisms such as forced inclusion and optimized proofs play an essential role in ensuring application compliance and integrity. Buterin advocated for a dual approach, supporting both rollups and direct Layer 1 (L1) transactions to ascertain which method optimally serves various applications, all while preserving the crucial feature of censorship-resistant transactions for everyday users.
