Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined his perspective on the appropriate timing for rollup-based layer-2 platforms to transition to a decentralized model. In a recent post, Buterin emphasized that the decision to decentralize should not be rushed but should instead be based on the security and reliability of the proof system. He argued that decentralization should occur only when the centralized components pose a greater risk than the decentralized system.

Buterin's comments were in response to a post by Daniel Wang, the founder and CEO of decentralized exchange Loopring. Wang highlighted the importance of system maturity in ensuring security, noting that even if a rollup is in stage two of development, it may still be running untested code. Rollup development is typically divided into three stages: stage zero, stage one, and stage two, with stage two being fully decentralized and trustless.

Wang proposed a new metric called "BattleTested" to evaluate the security of rollup systems. This badge would be awarded to rollups that have successfully secured at least $100 million in assets for at least six months, with a significant portion of those assets being in Ether (ETH) and a major stablecoin. The badge would be lost with each update, as the new code would need to withstand the scrutiny of attackers to earn it again.

Buterin agreed with Wang's analysis, emphasizing that the quality of the underlying proof system is crucial for security. He noted that decentralization should only occur when the onchain proof system is secure enough to make the centralized components a greater risk. Until then, decentralization could potentially make the system less secure by increasing reliance on the proof system.

Analysts have also weighed in on the issue, with some warning that rushing to decentralize could leave users vulnerable. Mike Tiutin, chief technology officer at decentralized compliance protocol PureFi, noted that decentralization is a long-term responsibility shared by the entire ecosystem. He cautioned that rushing to stage two could put ideology before safety and increase risks, as there would be no rollback in case of a bug.

On the other hand, some experts have highlighted the risks of not decentralizing at all. Arthur Breitman, co-founder of the Tezos blockchain, noted that prominent Ethereum L2s are fundamentally custodial, with privileged entities controlling core logic. He warned that this could jeopardize asset integrity and increase the risk of correlated failures.

In summary, Buterin's comments underscore the importance of security and reliability in the decentralization of rollup-based layer-2 platforms. While decentralization is a goal for many in the ecosystem, it should not be rushed and should only occur when the proof system is secure enough to make centralized components a greater risk. The debate highlights the ongoing tension between the desire for decentralization and the need for security in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
