Vishay Introduces New Tricolor LED for Automotive and RGB Applications

Vishay Intertechnology has introduced a new tricolor LED with 2800 mcd luminous intensity at 20 mA for automotive, RGB display, and backlighting applications. The Automotive Grade VLMRGB6122 features separate anode and cathode connections for the red, green, and blue LED chips, enabling individual control and wide color range. The LED is suitable for interior automotive lighting, RGB displays, and backlighting in consumer devices, home appliances, medical instrumentation, and telecom equipment.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) has announced the launch of its new tricolor LED, the Automotive Grade VLMRGB6122, designed to meet the demands of automotive, RGB display, and backlighting applications. The LED offers luminous intensity up to 2800 mcd at 20 mA, representing a 70% increase in brightness compared to previous generations and a 22% reduction in profile size compared to competitors [1].

The key feature of the VLMRGB6122 is its compact PLCC-6 surface-mount package, which houses separate anode and cathode connections for the red, green, and blue LED chips. This design allows for independent control of each chip, enabling a wide range of colors within the CIE 1931 color space through color mixing. The device is particularly suited for applications such as interior automotive lighting, RGB displays, and backlighting in consumer devices, home appliances, medical instrumentation, and telecom equipment [2].

The LED's high reliability is ensured by its wide temperature range from -40°C to +110°C, which is 25°C higher than standard solutions, and Class B1 corrosion robustness. It is AEC-Q102 qualified, offers a Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) of 3, and withstands ESD voltages up to 2 kV for red and 8 kV for blue and green in accordance with JESD22-A114-B. The device is also RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green, making it compatible with IR reflow soldering [3].
