Vietnam trade minister met USTR Greer to discuss main points in Vietnam’s replies to US requests on trade
Vietnam's trade minister met with the U.S. Trade Representative, Katherine Tai, on June 5, 2025, to discuss the main points in Vietnam's replies to the U.S.'s trade demands. The meeting comes amid ongoing tariff negotiations between the two countries, with the U.S. presenting Vietnam with a long list of "tough" requests.The U.S. has asked Vietnam to reduce its reliance on Chinese industrial goods imports and to better control its production and supply chains. If these requests are implemented, they could significantly impact Vietnam's economy, which is closely integrated with China's supply chains. Vietnam's manufacturing industry, which produces consumer goods such as Apple devices and Nike shoes, could face serious challenges if it has to cut its reliance on Chinese materials and components [1].
Vietnam has nearly tripled its exports to the U.S. since the start of the U.S.-China trade war in 2018, but it has also significantly expanded its imports from China. In 2024, both exports to the U.S. and imports from China totaled around $140 billion [1].
The U.S. has been engaged in trade negotiations with several countries, including Vietnam, the European Union, Japan, and India. The U.S. Trade Representative did not respond to a request for comment outside U.S. business hours, and Vietnam's trade ministry did not reply to a request for comment [1].
The meeting between the trade minister and USTR Greer is part of the ongoing effort to avoid 46% reciprocal tariffs on imports from Vietnam. It is unclear how Vietnam will respond to the U.S.'s requests and whether it will send its own proposal by Wednesday, as requested by the U.S. administration [1].
