Vietnam Aug. 1 trade balance $3,720 mln; est. $4,200 mln
Vietnam's trade balance for August 2025 stood at approximately $3.72 billion, according to the General Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance. This figure represents a significant decrease compared to the estimated surplus of $4.2 billion for the same period last year. The trade balance is calculated as the difference between the value of exports and imports. In August, Vietnam's total export value reached over $43 billion, marking a 3% increase from the previous month. Imports, however, totaled nearly $40 billion, down by about 1% compared to the previous month. This resulted in a trade surplus of close to $3 billion for the month of August. State budget revenue from import-export activities in August amounted to nearly VND36,000 billion (approximately $1.4 billion), a decline of more than 10% from July.
For the first eight months of 2025, Vietnam's total import-export value reached nearly $600 billion, up more than 16% compared to the same period last year. Exports totaled nearly $306 billion, up nearly 15% year-on-year, while imports reached nearly $292 billion, up nearly 18%. The trade surplus over the eight-month period was close to $14 billion, down nearly 26% compared to the same period last year. State budget revenue from import-export activities over the first eight months reached more than VND298,000 billion (approximately $11.3 billion), achieving nearly 73% of the annual estimate and rising over 8% year-on-year [1].
The trade deficit in the United States widened sharply in July 2025, with imports surging to record levels. The trade gap ballooned 32.5% to $78.3 billion, driven by a 5.9% increase in imports. This trend, if sustained, could see trade subtracting from gross domestic product in the third quarter. Imports of motor vehicles, parts, and engines decreased by $1.4 billion, pulled down by declines in imports of trucks, buses, and passenger cars [2].
