Velo3D (NASDAQ:VELO) has announced a significant collaboration with RTX and Raytheon Technologies Research Center to advance high-throughput additive manufacturing processes for Aluminum CP1 in defense applications. The U.S. Army's DEVCOM AvMC and M&S program is funding this initiative, which aims to establish a repeatable and scalable process for Aluminum CP1 production. The project seeks to strengthen the domestic industrial base and accelerate advanced manufacturing capabilities to support warfighter needs.
The collaboration focuses on developing an optimized laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process for Aluminum CP1, which is critical for defense applications requiring both light weight and high performance. Velo3D's large-format AM technology is leveraged to create a repeatable manufacturing process that can scale across programs and facilities. The initiative also aims to establish an Installation and Operational Qualification (IQ/OQ) framework, which replaces traditional point-qualification methods, supporting distributed manufacturing across the Department of Defense ecosystem.
This partnership is strategically significant as it addresses system agility, affordability, and operational readiness—three critical factors in next-generation defense capabilities. Velo3D's technology has been selected for its ability to overcome the traditional constraints of legacy L-PBF systems, offering advantages such as factory tool matching, in-situ monitoring, and standardized process parameters.
The project reflects the Army's continued focus on strengthening the domestic industrial base through collaborative and mission-aligned partnerships. By accelerating advanced manufacturing capabilities, the initiative supports the development of a resilient and agile defense supply chain, crucial for meeting the evolving needs of military forces.
