Vattenfall's Forsmark 1 output to be 550 MW from 1,104 MW

PG&E (NYSE:PCG) announced that Unit 2 of its Diablo Canyon power plant in San Luis Obispo, California, has officially entered extended operations, one day after the company originally planned to shut it down [1]. This move comes after California lawmakers directed the plant to continue operations following widespread power outages in 2020 and increased demand projections in 2022. The agreement to retire Unit 1 in November 2024 and Unit 2 in August 2025 was initially approved by state regulators in 2018. PG&E has requested the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to renew its Diablo Canyon license to allow the plant to operate through 2045.

Diablo Canyon generates electricity for approximately 4 million Californians, providing around 10% of the state's total electricity and nearly 20% of its clean, carbon-free energy. The plant's continued operation underscores the importance of reliable power sources, particularly in light of California's ongoing transition to renewable energy.

Meanwhile, Vattenfall has adjusted the output of its Forsmark 1 nuclear power plant. The plant's output has been reduced to 550 MW from its previous capacity of 1,104 MW. This adjustment is part of Vattenfall's broader strategy to optimize its operations and align with market demands.
